Road users are being urged to think about the different conditions they can face across our region at this time of year and what they can do to keep themselves and others safe.
The Industry Road Safety Alliance South West has launched a new campaign focussed on the importance of driving to conditions – be they traffic, weather or road conditions – in a bid to help curb the alarming road toll.
Alliance chairperson Simon Dent said traffic, weather and road conditions could vary greatly making for a lethal combination that road users needed to be aware of and be ready to deal with.
“Traffic volumes can vary greatly as people go about their daily business, commute to and from work, or head off on holidays,” Mr Dent said.
“The types of vehicles on our roads can vary from oversized loads, farm machinery and trucks to cars, motorcycles and vehicles towing caravans and boats. All have different needs and capabilities.
“At this time of year, our weather conditions can also vary greatly from sunstrike and smoke to flooding and fog.
“Add to this the varying condition of roads across our region from seal to unsealed, marked to unmarked, single to dual lane and it can be a lethal combination.”
Members of the alliance – including truck drivers, commuting workers and police – are using photos and videos to share their experiences and personal messages for keeping safe across a range of conditions.
Other road users are being urged to do the same and in doing so, not only make our roads safer, but also be in the running to win a $100 fuel voucher.
Share your experience or message in a photo or video on Facebook by the end of June, add the hashtag #Drive2Conditions and you could be in with a chance to win. Visit the Alliance’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/IRSASW to find out more.
The Alliance is an independent, collaborative group taking in major industries, local governments and state government agencies in the area bounded by Bunbury, Collie, Boddington and Pinjarra. Its aim is to mitigate and manage risks associated with industry road traffic, in turn, improving safety for all.
